Independent living skills (ILS) are the tasks students need to manage their daily life, such as housework, hygiene, and time management. These skills are broken down into three specific areas in the education field: recreation and leisure, community participation and home living. Each of these areas are addressed on an individualized basis for each student within the transition program.

Recreation and leisureLessons in recreation and leisure help students explore physical and leisure activities that they enjoy, whether they’re individual or part of a team.
community participationCommunity living and participation means being able to participate in meaningful community activities based on personal interests; and carry out responsibilities of citizenship such as paying taxes and voting.
home livingAll skills related to life at home also fall within this area: planning and preparing meals, grocery shopping, paying bills, budgeting and managing money, laundry and cleaning, and basic home care.
