Backpack program 2020 school year
The students at the SMEC Next STEP Transition Program East in Grand Meadow have been busy this month sorting, packing, and delivering food for the Channel One Regional Food Bank’s Backpack Program. This program is a component of the Service-Learning class offered at Next STEP and provides our students with a way to participate within their communities and learn about public service. The Backpack Programs helps children get the nutritious and easy-to-prepare food they need to get enough to eat on the weekends. Job shadow at KaaltvSophomore Brody Larson recently spent the afternoon vising KAAL television studios in Austin. Brody spend time in the various departments and even was able to set in on the news room conference meeting.
Person Centered Interagency IEP PilotSMEC has been selected to participate in the state wide pilot program. The Interagency Person-Centered IEP is a model that coordinates efforts across home, school and community to improve outcomes and engagement of children/youth and their families and effective interagency partnerships. We will be working together with Mower County VRS, Freeborn County DHS, Fernbrook Family Services, and our SMEC districts.

SMEC wins 1st place in Work SKills Challenge DayMore congratulations are in order for Sara and the SMEC Next STEP Transition Programs with their 1st place win in the overall competition at the Region 10 Work Skills Challenge Day in Austin! SMEC's name will be added to the traveling trophy for 2019. Way to go team!
Program moving summer 2019The Next STEP East Program will be moving locations. We have outgrown our space in Spring Valley and will be moving the transition program to the old hardware store in Grand Meadow.

Student wins 3rd Place in regional competitionCongratulations to Sara Conroy of Adams, MN for winning 3rd place at the Region 10 Work Skills Challenge Day (WSCD) in the job application category. Sara competed at Riverland Community College in Austin on April 18th in the 4th annual Works Skills Challenge Day.
