Project Based learning
Project-Based Learning is an instructional methodology that encourages students to learn and apply knowledge and skills through an engaging experience. PBL presents opportunities for deeper learning in-context and for the development of important skills tied to college and career readiness.
September 2016 - The students at Next S.T.E.P. - Southland gained a first-hand experience of the hard work it takes to finish a harvest! Two area gardeners donated over a dozen sunflowers, 10 pounds of apples, and 5 pounds of tomatoes to the program for our transition students to learn how to make the most of the local autumn produce.
Throughout the month of September, students at Next S.T.E.P. - Southland were involved in making applesauce, processing sunflower seeds, and canning barbeque sauce. The students learned the importance of sanitizing the jars during the canning process, how to remove the skins off tomatoes, and that sunflowers need time to dry out before harvesting the seeds.

October 2015 - The students at the Next STEP Transition Program learned the step by step process of making apple cider. A local couple who has been making their own homemade cider for many years volunteered their time and brought in their equipent so the students could follow the step by step process. A HUGE thank you to Bob and Judy Osmundson for showing us how to make homemade apple cider!
