Student placements through the next step wbl internship program
April 2018
Cruz Perez-Solis is finishing up his junior year of high school by spending his mornings preparing meals for residents at the Grand Meadow Senior Living as part of his internship. Cruz participates in a Work-Based Learning program through SMEC's Alternative Learning Center (ALC) Program. This program allows Cruz to earn high school course credits by engaging in real-world learning experiences outside of the traditional curriculum and classroom environment.
This Work-Based Learning Experience has also led to an employment opportunity for Cruz. He was recently hired for part time employment as a dietary aide. This experience was a great way for Cruz to get his foot in the door at a place of employment and gave him the prospect of finding a job. If he continues to remain employed he will be able to earn credits for his credit recovery courses and continue to participate in the Work-Based Learning program for his senior year of high school. This has been an excellent opportunity for a student who prefers experiential, hands-on learning over the traditional classroom.
